Just a question...
Hello everyone! I'm new to these forums and guild wars in whole. I'm seeking some help. Me and my friend will be starting together Guild Wars and I want to make a decision. The class that I liked the most by reading its description is Mesmer. The whole locking down other classes and punishing them for casting spells sounded cool. I also like Necromancer too, so I thought of making a Mesmer with secondary class Necromancer. But when I saw the two classes' primary attributes it seemed to me that Necro more useful (to my begginer eyes).
So, my question is, what is better, Necro/Mes or Mes/Necro? I will be doing lots of stuff in the game as I'm new, both PvE and PvP. Of course I will change my secondary class sometime, but for now these two classes come into my mind. |

I too made a mesmer as my first toon. However...I would make a ranger first...they have just as high armor and can have pets and are attacking from a distance.
oh Necro is great ... try that you have 4 slots Minion master is always a blast for pve |

Check out the Mesmer & Necromancer guides in The Campfire section. You'll get some ideas there.
The professions do mesh well together, so try out both combos and see which primary attribute works best for you. |

Both have great energy management, diverse builds, and usefulness. Really you can go either and run builds of the other profession if you'd like. My mesmer has a build with SS, Mark of Pain, and Necrosis.

The necro is much more versatile then the mesmer as far as different roles to play in PvE. While both can be fun to play you will find it is easier to get in a group as a necro then a mesmer.

Pve ----go necro, they are better and can farm places.
Pvp----go mesmer, they can be more that an annoyance if you do it right |

necro would be better for pve because with soul reaping you get energy back with all the foes dying
mesmer would be a good class for pvp because fast casting gets spells off quicker, making them harder to interrupt and allowing to cast more frequently. I'm shocked. someone new who actually used the wiki. |

Both classes are useful in PvP, however I preffer the Mesmer as it is more fun to totally shutdown a character than what the necro does.
Anyways, as far as it conserns PvE, go with a Necro, it just isn't worth to shutdown one enemy when you can take out whole groups of them. |

Good, you actually check background to know what your doing, this makes it a whole lot easier on all of us!
If you can start the game in Proph. Go N/Me, this is a devastating combination in pve, it is good to note that unless you have a good idea how to play the game, this can be hard on a new player, but you seem smart, so I assume you'll do fine. Things to look at would be the wiki guides to your class. Just look up necromancer or mesmer on wiki. I'd suggest you stick to necro primary though. Early on experiment with your different skills, and see which branch you'd like to focus on, later in the game, it is very easy to switch between multiple roles. I'd start off with curses, but death magic is easier to work for a new player. Eventually, if you read the guide, you'll see which attributes are best for which roles. |

Necro's can also shut down classes quite efficiently. I think that necros are better for pve and mesmers for pvp. Like said above...it's probably best to go necro for a main profession as it's easier for beginners. But in all honesty i don't use a secondary for necro outside of pvp for defensive skills. Don't worry too much about a secondary or it's skills you won't need them unless running a certain build.
Hope this helps and Welcome to GW |

Well, I am amazed by the number of answers I got! Thank you everyone
Well, your answers were very helpful...and confusing. Lots of opinions. To be honest, a class that has more ways of playing is something I would really like. Also, something like shutting down other classes sounds so cool. Preventing the use of their a abilities, slowing them and "crippling" them and then damaging them to death is my style of playing. |

Well, you start the game with at least 4 char slots....so I think you should start both a Mesmer and a Necro. Play both characters for a while and you'll gradually start to prefer one over the other. That will become your main character.
No need to delete the other one. You'll find situations where you enjoy playing the other class. Most players have several different characters that we've played thru the campaigns with. |
